Year 4 Autumn 1 2026

Welcome back!

Hello and welcome to the first half term in Year 4. We hope you have all had an enjoyable summer and are ready to work hard this year! We are really looking forward to getting to know your children and having a really fun year!

The Year 4 team is made up of Mrs Gent, Mrs Hannam, Miss Cotton, Mrs Bucksiewicz and Mrs Bennett. Mrs Hannam will teach Monday-Thursday and Miss Cotton will teach on a Friday in Class Hannam. Please feel free to speak to any member of the team if you wish to discuss something.

Our topic this term is ‘Inventions’ and we will be exploring lots of different inventions across history which have shaped our world today. In our topic lessons, we will be focussing on the invention of the steam train. We will also be visiting Nottingham Train Station by train so all the children will be able to have experienced what it is like to be on a train.

The children will participate in P.E. lessons on a Wednesday so please ensure that the children come to school dressed in their PE kit on these days.

On Wednesdays, the children will also be learning how to play the guitar. This is something that the children love doing each year and they get to perform in a concert with other schools from the city.

Children are expected to show that they have read at least four times at home during the week. Comment books will be checked regularly – please sign to acknowledge each occasion your child has read.

In Year 4, we begin to use the Accelerated Reader scheme which continues into Year 5 and 6. When they have completed a book, they can quiz on it to see how well they have read it. As long as there has been a quiz created, you can quiz on it. The book doesn’t have to come from our school library. We will do an initial assessment in the first couple of weeks to get their reading range. The children will quiz at school but they can also quiz at home if this is something they would like to do please follow this link: Renaissance Learning Login

If you have any questions or worries, please write in your child’s comment book or email year4@hempshillhall.nottingham.sch.uk

Thank you very much,

The Year 4 Team
