Year 5 Autumn 1 2026

Welcome to the first half term in Year 5, we are delighted to welcome Mrs Beeby to the Year 5 team! We hope you have all had an enjoyable summer and are ready to work hard this year! This half term, our topic is ‘Anglo-Saxons’ and we will be exploring this time period; who the Anglo-Saxons were and how they lived their lives, through a range of fun and exciting activities. This will build on well from students prior learning in Year Four where they learnt about the ‘Romans’.

We would like to remind you that weekly homework in Year 5 will be given out and taken in on the following days:

Year 5 Homework Given Out Due In
MathsFridayThursday
Literacy/GrammarFridayThursday

We run a ‘homework club’ on Thursday lunch times for those children who don’t manage to hand in their homework on time and the homework is reviewed weekly as a class.

Along with weekly homework, Year 5 are expected to read at least four times a week at home. Reading rewards and stars will be given out for children who have their reads written in their comment book. Comment books will be checked on Monday mornings so please remind children to hand it in so reads can be marked. We are happy for children to write their reads into their comment books themselves as long as a parent then signs it to confirm the reading has taken place.

We will be doing P.E. on Fridays so please come to school wearing P.E. kit (white t-shirt or polo shirt, black shorts or jogging bottoms, trainers and a plain sweatshirt or hoody) on these days. In addition, if possible, we would like students to have a pair of trainers to be kept at school so they can take part in the school’s initiative ‘The Weekly Mile’. This is to increase the amount of physical activity students take part in during the school day and the school’s aim is for each child to run a mile every week!

If you have any problems or wish to discuss any issues with any of the teachers, please write in your child’s comment book – please tell students if there is a comment so we are sure to see it. Alternatively, please contact us using the Year 5 email: year5@hempshillhall.nottingham.sch.uk

We look forward to meeting you all on Wednesday 9th September at the meet and greet and working with you all to make this an enjoyable and rewarding year.

Mr Kendall, Mrs Beeby, Mrs Chamberlain and Mrs Francis
