Year 2 Autumn 1 2026

A warm welcome into Year 2. We are so looking forward to getting to know all of the children and finding out about all the things that interest them and make them special. We are so pleased with the way that they have all settled into Year 2 so far and are really looking forward to the year ahead. 

We hope that you will be able to come along to the ‘Welcome Meeting’ on Tuesday 8^th September straight after school at 3.30pm, where we will be able to talk you through some of the important changes that you need to know about in Year 2.

Our topic for this half term is ‘Toys’: please have a look on the website for a detailed overview of all the exciting subjects that we will be covering this half term.  A brief summary can be found below:

In history we will learn about how toys have changed over time and be able to compare the similarities and differences with toys that we play with now.  We will bring this learning alive by using observational drawing to draw some real Victorian toys, both in small scale and large scale using a variety of different media.  In science we will learn about ‘Materials’ and we’ll learn how to identify and name a range of different materials; we’ll also describe and group them according to their different properties.  To end our science topic, we’ll perform some investigations to find out which materials are the best for specific jobs e.g. waterproof and windproof.  

I hope you agree that this all sounds very exciting, and the children will be learning so much!  We hope they enjoy telling you all about it at home.

Reading continues to be a priority in Year Two for all of the children and we ask for your help by regularly practising their reading at home with them.  Children will struggle to maintain the progress without regular reading at home.  Please let us know when you read at home by writing in the Comment Book - the target is 4 reads per week please.  Children love to receive rewards for reading regularly and are always very proud of their achievements.  We check the comment books on a Monday, so please make sure that the number of reads is up to date after the weekend.
