Year 2 Summer 1 2026
Catastrophes at Sea!
We hope you all had a lovely Easter break and are looking forward to a fun and busy half term.
We are starting our topic this half-term with our hugely popular ‘Shakespeare Week’. This year our chosen play is Macbeth and the children will be learning about this brave soldier from the story. We will use drama games to explore the themes of the supernatural and magic which will then lead into the children writing their own poem using some of the Shakespeare language. It is always a lovely week which the children enjoy!
We will then be learning all about the very brave Grace Darling and her heroic rescue at sea nearly two hundred years ago. We will compare her life with the life of Florence Nightingale that we learned about in Autumn 1, finding similarities and differences.
The Year 2 children will also enjoy reading about Mr Grinling, the Lighthouse Keeper. They will learn about his disastrous lunchtime experiences and explore the place where he lives. The children will be able to use their knowledge of geographical physical and human features, as well as descriptive language to describe the setting.
This topic will also focus on the history of holidays and the children will be finding out how people used to have day trips to the seaside, but now we can fly anywhere in the world. We are very much looking forward to taking the children to a ‘beach’ at Spring Lakes in Long Eaton. It’s much too far for us to travel to the coast, but Spring Lakes offers a wonderful ‘beach’ experience for the children, where they can make sandcastles and even have a paddle. We will also be able to show the children in real life some of the physical and human features we have been learning about in geography e.g. power station, river, canal, lake etc.
In numeracy, we will be focusing on telling the time to o’clock, half past and quarter to and past and learning about different units of measurement e.g. centimetre, litre, kilogram etc. We will also be practising our number skills by using all four operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Many thanks for your support.
