Year 1 Autumn 1 2026

Welcome to Year 1! We are really looking forward to getting to know the children and our first topic is the perfect way to do that as we learn about ourselves. The children will be developing their writing skills by writing about themselves, their families and things that make them similar and different to their friends.

In Year 1 we like to celebrate diversity and get to know our families and children. To promote diversity, we spend time discussing the different cultures and values we all have. If there is anything you would like to share, it would be wonderful if you could talk about your experiences with us all.

There are lots of new routines to learn but it won’t be long before the children get in the swing and will no doubt be reminding us what happens when.

We hope to see you all at the Meet and Greet meeting on Tuesday 8^th September at 3:30pm. This will be an opportunity for you to meet the staff in Year 1 and to look around your child’s new classroom. We will be talking about routines and expectations in for the year.  This meeting will also be a good time for you to ask any questions you may have.

Please remember to bring your child’s reading wallet to school every day and to use the home/school diary to keep in touch as well as making comments about reading at home. Diaries are checked every day and will be especially important to log and count how many reads your child does at home in order for your child to receive reading rewards.

We love books at Hempshill and would encourage you to share books with your children and listen to them read as often as you can. We will also build our knowledge of authors and build a bank of favourite stories in our daily reading for pleasure sessions which is a Y1 favourite with both teachers and children!

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to ask – the end of the day is the best time of day to speak to your child’s teacher if needed, though there will always be a member of staff on the door in the morning as well.
