Year 1 Summer 1 2026
Our last half term together as Year one! We have had a great year and the children have made lots of progress! We have seen the children grow and mature in many ways! We will be very sad to see them go but know they are all now ready for Year 2! We still have lots of lovely activities and learning opportunities for the children in their last half term!
This half terms topic is ‘Picture a better world’ and we will have a focus on recycling. To launch our topic, we will have a ‘rubbish’ morning. Children will think about the 4 R’s– Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle.
In English the children will be reading The Tin Forest by Helen Ward. We will re-write the narrative focusing on the structure of the story. We will use new vocabulary taken from the text in our own writing and use expanded noun phrases to describe all the detail in the story. We will also be using a non-fiction recycling text to build on our knowledge of recycling and produce a non-fiction report to inform.
In science, we will be learning all about the Seasons by observing changes across Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. We will describe the weather and also notice how day length changes across the year. We will be addressing misconceptions, such as it always snows in Winter and Summer is always hot.
In DT we will be tasting lots of different fruits and vegetables and then designing our own vegetable salad using some of the delicious produce from our school garden – Always a favourite for the children as they get hands on with all the ingredients!
