Welcome to year 6!

We hope you have had a lovely holiday and are looking forward to a new term.

Our first week back will be dedicated to getting to know each other and how we contribute to our school community. We will be starting our new school year with our Animal Kingdom topic. This is a geography unit where the children will develop skills in locating places and physical features as well as comparing biomes. This will link nicely to our Evolution and Inheritance topic in Science that looks at how animals are adapted to their environment.

Our English units will link to our topic and we will begin by writing a poetry about the different biomes of the world. After this they will move onto writing a non-chronological report, using technical vocabulary and subheadings to inform the reader about a lizard and its environment. Finally, using our class read Skellig, we will be writing setting descriptions. 

Our PE will be on Tuesdays and the children are to come to school in their kit for the day.  PE kit should consist of a plain white t-shirt and dark shorts with suitable footwear.  It is fine for your child to wear a tracksuit, which should be in school colours where possible.

As you will already know, Year 6 is a very important year for the children as it is their final year in primary school.  We will do everything we can to make it a special one for them and prepare them for their transition to secondary school.  Part of this preparation is by setting them weekly homework in maths and grammar, and continuing the expectation of reading 4 times a week at home.  Maths and grammar will be handed out on Mondays and need to be handed in on Fridays.
